Tucked away in the lush Sahyadri ranges, Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary is a refreshing escape from Mumbai’s heat, pollution, and chaos - a perfect weekend getaway for nature lovers and weary city souls.
How to reach:
Getting here takes about six hours from Mumbai, with the Chakan–Manchar route offering the smoothest drive. Follow the route here. There’s an alternate, shorter road on the map, but don’t be tempted - its poor condition can easily ruin your trip before it begins.
Best time to visit:
The best time to visit is right after the monsoons, when the entire landscape bursts into life. Hills draped in emerald green, wildflowers in full bloom, and glistening lakes dotting the meadows - nature puts on a show that’s nothing short of magical. The crisp mountain air feels like therapy, and the sounds of cowbells mingling with distant waterfalls create an atmosphere of pure serenity. You don’t need to jet off abroad for such beauty - it’s right here in Maharashtra!

The attractions:

The sanctuary is also the home of the Malabar Giant Squirrel (Ratufa indica), Maharashtra’s state animal and one of the few remaining Indo-Malayan giant squirrel species. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect this vibrant, elusive creature in its natural habitat. Witness the animal in its full swing here.
Just a short distance away lies the Bhimashankar Temple, one of India’s twelve sacred Jyotirlingas. Perched amidst dense forests and misty hills, this ancient temple attracts devotees from across the country - a spiritual experience that beautifully complements the area’s natural charm.
Where to stay:
For the stay overnight, Arunya Kulam Lake View Resort is a great choice. Nestled beside a tranquil lake, it offers spacious cottages, scenic views, and that much-needed dose of quiet luxury amid nature.
