Jawhar feels like one of those rare, off-beat gems that Maharashtra still keeps under wraps. About a comfortable four-hour drive from Mumbai, this small hill town in Palghar district is often called the City of Waterfalls—and rightly so. Perched at around 1,500 feet above sea level, slightly lower than Lonavla, Jawhar is far less touristy and ideal for those seeking peace, greenery, and unhurried time in nature. For Mumbaikars, it makes for a refreshing weekend getaway without the crowds.

Stay

Prakriti Agro Farm Resort sits along the highway, a few kilometres from the Jawhar market. Still in its early days, the resort offers simple yet comfortable rooms at very affordable rates. What truly stands out are the delicious home-style meals—both vegetarian and non-vegetarian—the warm hospitality of the staff and owners, and the ample parking space.

The surrounding farms are alive with birdlife, making it an unexpected delight for birdwatchers and photography enthusiasts.

Points of Interest

Kalmandavi Waterfall

Rocky hills and green trees surround a calm river in a sunlit valley. People stand on the rocks. Text reads "Baldis photography."
Kalmandavi water fall

Surprisingly underrepresented online, Kalmandavi is a true highlight of Jawhar and easily among Maharashtra’s most stunning waterfall spots. You can drive up to a point which leads to a small parking area (with a nominal fee), followed by a roughly 20-minute trek to the base. Local guides accompany visitors to ensure safety.

Closed during the monsoon, the post-monsoon views are spectacular—multiple cascading waterfalls, natural pools, and dramatic cliffs. Visitors can swim, relax by the water, or even take a cliff jump, provided safety norms are followed. Life jackets are mandatory for all activities.

Other Things to Do in Jawhar

Sunset Point – for serene evening views

Hanuman Point – offers sweeping panoramic vistas

Jai Vilas Palace – closed to visitors inside, but worth a photo stop

Shirpamal – historically significant with expansive views

Khadkhad Dam – popular for boating

Dabhosa Waterfall – another scenic waterfall nearby

Jawhar may not shout for attention like some hill stations—but perhaps that is exactly its charm.

“Not all who wander are lost; some are simply finding quieter places to belong.”
