Kiribati, one of the most remote and isolated island nations in the world, has gone into its first ever COVID-19 lockdown. The decision was taken after around 36 passengers to Kiribati on the first international flight (in 10 months) from Fiji tested positive for Coronavirus.
Until last week, Kiribati had recorded only two cases of the virus. Being one of the isolated islands in the world, the island had managed to remain COVID-free till now and never got into a lockdown kind of situation ever since the pandemic began. But, on Tuesday, the government of Kiribati confirmed that 36 of the 54 passengers were positive for the virus.
Kiribati is a beautiful island nation in the central Pacific Ocean, close to Samoa and Fiji. Among the 33 islands of Kiribati, only 21 are inhabited and are dotted across a huge area of the ocean. These are further divided into three zones—the Gilbert Islands, the Phoenix Islands, and the Line Islands. The country is home to about 120,000 people and is mostly known for its coconut plantation and fish farms.
