Chennai: A day after a 14-year-old leopardess Jaya died in a squeeze cage, an employee of Aringnar Anna Zoological Park in Vandalur was suspended on Tuesday. The leopardess that was put in a squeeze cage for taking swabs for Covid-19 testing choked to death in the rusty cage on Monday.
The cause of the death as per Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University was that the leopardess’ rib got squeezed and the oxygen flow got restricted to the lungs. As a result, there was a blood clot and hemorrhage in the brain.
WHAT ARE SQUEEZE CAGES?
Squeeze cages are equipped with a special back-panel that can be moved in such a way that the animal is forced to come to the front of the cage and tolerate being partially or completely immobilised. Squeeze cages are commonly used to facilitate venipuncture, injection, topical application of drugs, close-up examination, and other procedures.
Squeeze cages are stressful for the animal but are safe for the handler.
IT MAKES US PONDER…
Is the suspension of the worker enough?
Aren’t we all responsible in some way?
We humans make zoos so that we can see the animals on display,
We use products and drugs which have been experimented on animals before,
We breed animals for food,
We hunt animals for their tusks, horns and to display as trophies
We make animals fight or perform tricks for our entertainment…
How much can we change ourselves or our lifestyles?
As Yuval Noah Harari aptly states
“Homo sapiens have a dubious distinction of being the deadliest species in the annals of biology. “
